Wolf may return to Oregon

The wandering wolf OR-7 is retracing his steps through Northern California and could return to Oregon as early as today.

Satellite tracking through a transmitter collar on OR-7 shows Tuesday morning the nearly 3-year-old male was in northeast Siskiyou County about 10 miles from the Oregon border. He crossed from Oregon into California Dec. 28 in his long and very public trek to find a mate.

This lone wolf has traveled more than 40 miles a day on occasions since his dispersal journey from remote northeast Oregon began Sept. 10, putting him well within walking distance of his home state.

“Whether he crosses into Oregon, we don’t k now,” says Michelle Dennehy, spokesperson for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s wolf program. “He could turn right back.”

The wolf had been hanging out for the better part of a month in the Lassen County area of northeastern California, traveling almost to the Nevada border.

Just a week ago he was in southeastern Shasta County, but has abruptly headed north and showed up Monday morning in Siskiyou County, according to the California Department of Fish and Game.

Biologists on both sides of the Oregon-California border are awaiting Wednesday’s satellite reports to see if OR-7 leaves California, where he remains — for now — the state’s first confirmed wolf since 1924.
