Public meeting to address Forest vehicle travel plan

Herald and News May 11, 2013

DORRIS — A public meeting to review the Forest Service’s motor vehicle use plan will be at 7 p.m. May 31 at the Dorris City Hall.

An incorrect date for the meeting was previously reported.

Organizers said the informational meeting is intended to inform people of the effects of the Klamath National Forest’s motor vehicle use plan.

“If you cut wood, hunt, fish or even drive in the national forest you must be at this meeting,” said Dave Andreatta, who is helping to organize the meeting.

The plan for the 1.7 million-acre Klamath National Forest is shown on maps that indicate designated roads, trails and areas open for public motorized travel on forest lands. The Klamath forest website said the map is required by the 2005 final travel management rule and is a product of the 1995 Klamath National and Forest Land and Resource Management Plan.

“If the route is not shown on the motor use vehicle map, then it is not open to public motor vehicle travel,” according to the Forest’s website. “To help identify routes that are available for motor vehicle use, signs have been placed on the entrances to these roads and trails. However, since the (map) includes official information on designation of motor vehicle routes, it is the user’s responsibility to reference the (map), to stay on designated motor vehicle route and follow terms of allowable use.”

Andreatta said people attending the meeting will be informed of possible fines up to $5,000 and/ or up to six months in prison for traveling a closed road.

For information, call Andreatta at 530-397-2116 after 5 p.m.
