Council may hire water attorney

The city of Klamath Falls would like to know if and how its wells are tied to groundwater, and may hire a hydrogeologist for the job.

Members of City Council Monday night will consider an agreement with a hydrogeologist from Geosyntec Consultants for $76,100 to help determine if city wells interfere with groundwater resources, as well as how the geothermal aquifer operates, as stated by the Oregon Water Resources Department.

“Two of the city’s wells are in the state’s identified zone of influence for Upper Klamath Lake because they are within 1 mile of the affected surface water body,” said Public Works Director Mark Willrett in a staff report. “Fremont Well would continue to remain shut off for the duration of the irrigation season and Wocus Well could be used on a reduced level.”

Geosyntec is one of two firms that responded to the city’s request for proposal for hydrogeologic services. The city has outlined three main tasks for the hydrogeologist: Review and potentially challenge the OWRD’s decision to shut off or reduce the Wocus and Fremont wells; Review Conger Well field’s connection to surface water; and review the impact of the city’s geothermal well.

City to hold public hearing on budget

In other business, members of City Council also will:

• Consider expanding the security camera grant program to all commercial and industrial areas within city limits, at a price tag of $20,000.

• Consider a resolution to adopt a supplemental budget authorizing the city to pay $5,275 in interest accrued due to a late payment of the city’s Water Refunding Bond. The city will hold a public hearing regarding the issue.
