Our Klamath Basin
Water Crisis
Upholding rural Americans' rights to grow food,
own property, and caretake our wildlife and natural resources.
RESPONSE by Deb Crisp, Tulelake
Growers Association Director To: 'Water bank’ drags river basin deeper into debt, High Country News, October 17th Edition, by Rebecca Clarren
"If I remember correctly this was to be a "pilot"
program just as the land idling began as a "pilot"
program. Question - At what point in time
will "Pilot" be changed to "Permanent"?
WE NEED DEEP WATER, OFF STREAM STORAGE TO
MEET THE INCREASED DEMANDS ON THE KLAMATH
PROJECT BY INTERESTS OTHER THAN AGRICULTURE.
WHAT PROGRESS HAD BEEN MADE ON THE LONG
LAKE PROJECT? WHY DON'T WE HAVE AS MUCH SUPPORT
FOR STORAGE AS WE DO LAND IDLING AND GROUNDWATER
SUBSTITUTION?
I BELIEVE KLAMATH PROJECT IRRIGATORS WANT
TO OPERATE THEIR FARMS AND RANCHES WITH WATER
SUPPLIED BY THE PROJECT. THEY HAVE BEEN FORCED BY
AGENDA DRIVEN SCIENCE IN THE BIOLOGICAL OPINIONS
AND THE "OVER ALLOCATION MYTH" TO DRILL WELLS AND
IDLE HIGHLY PRODUCTIVE LANDS.
IT IS MY HOPE THAT THE NRC REPORT, USGS
REPORT AND THE NATURAL FLOW STUDY WILL ASSIST THE
AGENCIES IN THE RE-CONSULTATION PROCESS THAT
WILL PROVIDE CONSIDERABLE RELIEF FOR OUR
AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY.
OUR FARMS AND RANCHES UTILIZE
APPROXIMATELY 3% OF THE WATER FLOWING OUT THE
MOUTH OF THE KLAMATH RIVER. I WILL NEVER
UNDERsTAND THE BELIEF THAT CURTAILING OR
ELIMINATING THIS 3% WILL SOME HOW CURE ALL OF THE
REAL OR PERCEIVED PROBLEMS IN THE KLAMATH
WATERSHED. THIS CONCEPT IS ILLOGICAL,
UNSUBSTANTIATED AND WILL NOT INCREASE THE NUMBERS
OF ENDANGERED AND THREATENED FISH SPECIES."
