For Immediate Release September 23, 2004 Doolittle: My, How Times Have Changed - Iraq's Prime Minster Addresses U.S. Congress - Committed to Winning War on Terror in Iraq Washington, D.C. - House Republican Conference Secretary John T. Doolittle (R-Calif.) said today terrorism was dealt a decided blow as Iraq's Prime Minister, Iyad Allawi, spoke before Congress and thanked America for her commitment to spreading democracy in Iraq. "Today, freedom truly reigned as the leader of a free Iraq stood before Congress and praised America for defending democracy in his country," Doolittle said. "It is unfathomable to imagine Saddam Hussein standing before Congress praising human rights, free speech, and democracy like Mr. Allawi did today. Yet, some still say the world would better off with Hussein in power. "Just Mr. Allawi's presence before Congress today made it crystal clear that we have already achieved success in Iraq by setting the wheels of democracy in motion," Doolittle continued. "And now more than ever, our resolve must remain crystal clear to the rest of the world. America will not rest until the terrorists are defeated. Liberty will triumph." A neurologist and businessman, Iyad Allawi was the unanimous choice of the Governing Council to fill the role of Interim Prime Minister of Iraq. As Prime Minister, Allawi is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Iraq's interim government. He is a strong leader, who endured exile for decades and survived assassination attempts by Saddam's regime yet has always remained an Iraqi patriot. U.S. Rep. John T. Doolittle has served in the House of Representatives since 1991. As Secretary of the House Republican Conference, he is an elected member of the House Republican Leadership. Doolittle represents California's 4th Congressional District and serves on the Appropriations Committee, Energy and Water and DC Appropriations Subcommittees, and the House Administration Committee. ### |
