USGS Water Quality and Sucker
Distribution Update 9/23/04
USGS
Update Table of Contents
Water
temperatures were again lower this week. Daytime
temperatures in our
study area ranged from 11.2 to 16.4 'C (all but one
site ranged from 11.2
to 13.2 'C). Dissolved oxygen concentrations were
higher this week and
ranged from 7.3 to 11.8 mg/L. The highest and
lowest concentrations were
found in the northern portion of the study area
(7.3 and 11.8 mg/L) while
the range of values in the south was relatively
narrow (8.8 to 10.0 mg/L).
Levels of pH continued to increase. The range of pH
values, 8.6 to 10.0,
was essentially unchanged from last week, but only
one site had a pH below
9.0 as compared to six sites last week. The
distribution of radio-tagged
adult suckers continued to increase with fish
scattered in an area
stretching from the mouth of Pelican Bay south into
Ball Bay east to Eagle
Point and south to Bare Island. A few fish were
also located in the lower
Williamson River.
These data are preliminary and are being provided as
a qualitative
assessment of lake conditions and fish
distributions. Only daytime
conditions collected by our water quality crews as
they visit each
monitoring site in our study area (all of Upper
Klamath Lake north of Bare
Island including Ball and Shoalwater bays, but
excluding Agency Lake)
during the course of the week are reported. They
are not meant to be
representative of the full range of conditions
occurring throughout the day
and night nor representative of conditions in all
areas of the lake.
