USGS Water Quality and Sucker Distribution Update 9/13/04

Water quality conditions in the lake last week moderated somewhat from the
previous week.  Dissolved oxygen concentrations ranged from 5.7 to 12.2
mg/L again with the higher concentrations in the northern portion of our
study area (6.6 to 12.2 mg/L) and lower levels in the south (5.7 to 7.8
mg/L).  Levels of pH ranged from 8.5 to 9.4, a slight increase on the high
end, with the higher levels to the north.  Water temperatures decreased
somewhat at all sites, ranging from 17.0 to 19.4 'C.

Radio-tagged sucker distributions were very similar to that of the previous
week with a number of fish spread out in a band between Pelican Bay and
Ball Point.  We have also observed some fish redistributing from the west
to the east side of the study area.

These data are preliminary and are being provided as a qualitative
assessment of lake conditions and fish distributions.  Only daytime
conditions collected by our water quality crews as they visit each
monitoring site in our study area (all of Upper Klamath Lake north of Bare
Island including Ball and Shoalwater bays, but excluding Agency Lake)
during the course of the week are reported.  They are not meant to be
representative of the full range of conditions occurring throughout the day
and night nor representative of conditions in all areas of the lake.
