New leaders for SOSS
Howard and Laura Moody will serve as executive directors.

SISKIYOU
COUNTY – “He’s a real class act,” said Ernie
Wilkinson, co-chairman of the Save Our Shasta and
Scott Valleys coalition, referring to the newly
appointed SOSS Executive Director, Howard Moody.
But the
recently retired chief administrator of Siskiyou
County won’t be working alone. Howard’s wife, Laura,
has agreed to work for the coalition as well. SOSS leaders say this development was a “real coup” for the grassroots group.
Meet and greet on Feb. 13
SOSS will be holding a social hour during the next monthly meeting in honor of the new executive directors. At 7 p.m. on Feb. 13, the public is encouraged to attend. It will be held at the Fort Jones Community Center.
“We are
absolutely delighted to have Howard and Laura on
board,” said Wilkinson.
Expanding
outreach to the local citizens, other like-minded
organizations, government agencies and legislators
are the major goals.
“SOSS
recognizes the continued need for involvement in
water and ag issues,” Wilkinson said. “These issues
are not going away, but seem to be multiplying.”
The
organizational aspect of SOSS galvanized the
leadership of Shasta Valley and Scott Valley in
2001, which then worked closely with the county.
Dealing with the California State Endangered Species
Act listing of the coho salmon was the first battle.
Then increased watermaster fees threatened to hit
those with legal water rights and now the state
water quality board is banging at the door. Howard was a major player, along with SOSS, on those issues. Besides being a military veteran and a veteran of Colorado water wars, Moody is now veteran of Siskiyou agricultural water wars. In fact, he is known in many realms of government for protecting farmers, ranchers and business in Siskiyou County. |
