The $1.08 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to the Yurok Tribe was announced Monday by Democratic Congressman Mike Thompson of St. Helena.
The money will be used to build a 2,500-square-foot visitor center off Highway 101 that will highlight the culture of the Yurok and other tribes and provide general information about activities in Northern California.
Yurok Transportation Manager Joseph James said construction is expected to be completed by the end of next summer. The total cost of the project is $1.2 million, with the Yurok making up the difference.
