Casino: All bets off

Siskiyou Daily News, April 9, 2009

Yreka, Calif. - The Alturas Indian Rancheria announced in a news release that it is ceasing all efforts to build a casino in Yreka.

“After careful consideration, we realized that many legal challenges prevented us from this goal. The Bureau of Indians Affairs, the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC), the State of California and the Karuk Tribe all identify the allotment lands owned by Darren Rose as under Karuk jurisdiction. Therefore, we are unable to build a casino owned and operated by the Alturas Indian Rancheria,” Tribal Chairman Phillip Del Rosa stated in the release. “We would like to thank John Hay of the NIGC; Carmen Facio of Pacific Regional Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs; and Dr. Virgil Akins, superintendent of the Northern California Agency of the Bureau of Indian Affairs for giving a fair and balanced look at our project. Further, we respect the stance of the Karuk Tribe and wish to respect their sovereign jurisdiction. We wish Darren Rose all the best in his future endeavors.”

For further questions, contact Del Rosa at (530) 233-5571.
