Measure G: advisory election with respect to removal of dams along Klamath River

Siskiyou County, Calif. — What it asks: Voters county-wide will have a chance to answer the question “Should the Klamath River Dams (Iron Gate, Copco 1, and Copco 2) and associated hydroelectric facilities be removed?”

What it will mean: The measure’s effects were argued during the process to put it on the ballot, with some questioning the effectiveness of an advisory election, regardless of the outcome. Proponents of the measure have argued that it will be a clear statement of where Siskiyou County stands on the issue.

Oregon’s Klamath County voters will also be looking at an advisory measure this year asking them to weigh in on whether or not their county should continue to be a party to the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement.

Why it is on the ballot: Under the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement, the Secretary of the Interior will decide whether four dams along the Klamath River will be removed, weighing whether doing so will restore salmon populations and is in the best interest of the public.
