We have a lot of candidates running for local and state offices in the May primary. One issue that is still foremost in this community is the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement/dam removal proposal. It is important to remember that these are not separate issues.

They are one proposal and you cannot have one without the other. Some candidates will tell you they are for the KBRA but against dam removal. That may be true but when they choose to support the KBRA, they are also supporting dam removal.

The KBRA permanently reduces irrigation in the Basin, gives no protection from Endangered Species Act and provides no additional water storage or lower power rates. Dam removal offers an unproven, speculative outcome and eliminates clean hydropower. Both will reduce the tax base for the county and give the federal government more control of our resources.

In contrast, the following candidates oppose the KBRA/ dam removal as currently proposed, plus they are fiscally conservative and support limited government, reduced regulations and local control of our resources. They deserve your vote.

• County Commissioner Position 1: Tom Mallams

• County Commissioner Position 3: Jim Bellet
