Governor Kulongoski's statement on Klamath dam removal proposal

With negotiations now complete, agreement will be reviewed by each party for signature

September 30, 2009

(Salem) - “Today we have reached another milestone in our efforts to bring certainty and stability to the water issues in the Klamath Basin and, at the same time, restore the Klamath River for agriculture and fish.

“With Oregon’s best interest in mind, I support the agreement announced today. It represents a thoughtful approach that balances the needs of all who depend on a healthy river and wild salmon – vital for social and economic livelihoods.

“The agreement calls upon each of us to do our part. Oregon has already shown leadership and commitment through action. The Oregon legislature passed the needed legislation to implement this historic agreement, taking us one step further down the path to potential removal of four dams and the restoration of the river to its natural state.

“Now, we all must turn our attention to the Klamath Basin River Restoration Agreement. I have hope that this water-sharing agreement will bring an end to decades-old conflicts and a beginning to a new, collective approach that will serve all who depend on the river and its resources.”
