Interior visit expected on Klamath
issues
Yreka, Calif. — County Counsel Thomas Guarino notified
the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors Tuesday that
United States Department of the Interior (DOI) spokesman
John Bezdek intends to travel to Siskiyou County to
discuss the board’s participation in processes
associated with the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement
Agreement.
Bezdek, representing the DOI on behalf of Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, has been to the county in the past, including the April 1, 2010 meeting in which the supervisors cast a majority vote to not sign the KHSA and Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement. Under the KHSA, Salazar is expected to make a determination in 2012 as to whether or not four dams along the Klamath River will be removed. Tuesday, District 5 Supervisor Marcia Armstrong asked Guarino to specify whether or not the meeting would be a “coordination” meeting. In the past the board has requested that the DOI coordinate with it with regard to planning under the KHSA and KBRA, as described in United States Code 43, section 1701. Guarino indicated that the meeting would likely be geared more toward a public workshop setting. The board approved acceptance of Bezdek’s offer, with the expectation that the workshop will take place during a regularly scheduled board meeting. |
