California PUC approves dam removal
surcharge
California — The California Public Utilities Commission
(CPUC) has officially given its approval for a dam
removal surcharge for utility company PacifiCorp’s
Northern California customers, clearing the measure as
part of its consent agenda Thursday morning.
Under the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement, PacifiCorp is required to secure approximately $200 million from its Oregon and California customers to partially cover the costs of removing four of its dams on the Klamath River. Last year the Oregon Public Utilities Commission approved that state’s surcharge, which comprises most of the $200 million. Thursday’s decision by the CPUC will solidify the $13.76 million surcharge for California customers, to be assessed over a nine-year period, resulting in an estimated $1.61 increase to the average monthly customer bill. An administrative law judge’s prior ruling on the surcharge was issued in February, a ruling affirmed by the PUC’s decision. As part of the process, PacifiCorp must follow a list of instructions, including the submission of an annual report on the status of activities related to the potential dam removal. – David Smith can be reached at dsmith@siskiyoudaily.com |
