A townhall meeting in
Tulelake this past weekend only strengthened U. S . Rep. Tom
McClintock’s opposition to
the Klamath Basin
Restoration Agreement, the congressman said.
About 100 people attended
the Tulelake meeting, and about 200 attended a town hall
meeting in Alturas.
Some focused on issues
such as health care reform and the economy, but McClintock
said he heard a lot of opposition to the restoration
agreement, which seeks to resolve disputes over water in the
Basin.
The agreement
The restoration agreement
was signed in late February by the majority of stakeholders
who crafted it. The document now needs federal legislation
and about $1 billion in
funding to be implemented.
McClintock, a Republican
who represents Modoc County, said he met with irrigators
on the Klamath Reclamation Project and those served by
Tulelake Irrigation District, and said he sympathized with
their support of the agreement. He said they described their
support as a
result of having “a gun to their head.”
The congressman said he
couldn’t support anything that removes hydroelectric dams on
the Klamath River because energy prices are high, especially
in California.
McClintock said this
wouldn’t be the last time he visits the Basin, adding he plans
to make a few more trips to this part of his district this
year.
