Everyone not part of KBRA process
Herald and News letter to the editor Oct 25, 2015 by Marvin
Cantrell, Klamath Falls
I read, with great interest, the letter to the editor by Mrs.
Tricia Hill, the representative of Gold Dust Potato Processors
Inc. and J&W Walker Farms Inc.
I haven't read any fairy tales lately, actually not for probably
60 years. However, I have read real terror stories in the Herald
and News from Mrs. Hill and many others about what a great deal
it will be to get the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement
passed. Anybody who is against it, is painted as an
obstructionist and not very bright.
I really admire Dennis Linthicum and Klamath County Commissioner
Tom Mallams for standing up for their values.
Mrs. Hill stated in her letter that "we" negotiated the
settlement agreement because "we" realized it was best for "our
farms and our communities."
What about the rest of the communities? What about the Upper
Klamath Basin? What about Sprague River, Chiloquin, Beatty, BIy
and Bonanza? How about the rest of the ranchers and farmers
trying to make a living?
Mrs. Hill stated that, without water, Klamath Basin agriculture
will die. She is right, but who is going to take our water?
What is wrong with following the water rights first stipulated
when the reclamation project was first built? They have had
water available since about the early I900s. Now it's all gone?
The negotiated settlement agreement was done in secret in
Sacramento, Calif., by a select few. Certainly not done in a
democratic manner. There needs to be an investigation of the
Department of Interior, the Department of Reclamation, and the
Klamath Water and Power Authority as to how the water has been
allocated.
Maybe the Oregon Water Resources Department needs to take
another look at its adjudication efforts and think about the
results of drying up the Klamath Basin economy.
