Washington, D.C. 20515 (202) 225-7749 www.house.gov/resources/republicans Contacts: Steve Hansen (Republican Communications Director) April 29, 2008 "President Bush Is Absolutely Correct - The Democratic Anti-Energy Policies Will Continue To Worsen America's Gas & Energy Problems" - Rep. Don Young Democrats Continue To Keep 10.4 Billion Barrels Of Oil Locked Up In ANWR Washington, D.C. - The following is U.S. Rep. Don Young's (R-Alaska) statement regarding President Bush's remarks this morning on increasing gas and energy prices. Young is the Ranking Member on the House Natural Resources Committee. If President Clinton Hadn't Vetoed ANWR Oil Production In 1995, America Would Already Be Using This Domestic Energy "President Bush is absolutely correct in pointing out that the Democratic Party's anti-energy policies will continue to worsen America's gas and energy problems. "In 1995, former President Clinton vetoed a bill containing legislation I sponsored that would have allowed for the environmentally-sound production of the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. If President Clinton hadn't vetoed this bill, ANWR production would now be providing our nation with more than one million barrels of oil each day. "This Democratic opposition to ANWR oil production has kept 10.4 billion barrels of American oil locked up in the northern coast of Alaska Coastal Desert. "Instead, we are forced to import more and more oil from the Middle East and other foreign nations at a price of $120 a barrel. Now, Democratic Leadership Wants To Permanently Lockup ANWR's Oil . . . Forever "But that's just the tip of the iceberg. The Democratic leadership in Congress wants to hammer the final nail in ANWR's coffin and keep this 10.4 billion barrels of American oil locked up forever. "Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), the Democratic Chairman of the Energy Independence and Global Warming Committee, has introduced legislation to permanently lockup all of ANWR's oil forever. Democratic Chairman Markey wants to classify the barren tundra over this oil field as a permanent wilderness area which will forever prohibit any of this oil from being produced for American consumers. "Democratic Chairman Markey's bill would ensure that America will have to continue to pay OPEC and other foreign oil producers even higher prices. Democrats Also Want To Lockup An Additional 27.8 Billion Barrels Of Energy In Alaska's Chukchi Sea "Democratic Chairman Markey is also leading his Party's effort this year to stop the production of another 27.8 billion barrels of oil equivalent in Alaska's Chukchi Sea. He says none of this American energy should be produced for our country. "These are just a couple of the Democratic leadership's policies in my home State of Alaska that have skyrocketed gas prices to $3.60 a gallon and oil to $120 a barrel." AMERICAN ENERGY - BY THE NUMBERS 10.4 Billion Barrels of American Energy locked up in ANWR - the Democrat Majority wants to throw away the key 0.01% Percentage of ANWR that would be affected by 21st century American energy development (2000 acres of the 19.6 million-acre refuge) 162.3 Billion Barrels of Untapped American Energy in the Nation's outer continental shelf (OCS) according to the Minerals Management Service (MMS) 85% Percentage of OCS off-limits to energy development in the Lower 48 27.8 Billion Barrels of American Energy Democrats would like to see locked up in the Chukchi Sea 1 Million American jobs created if Democrats would end their irrational opposition to energy development in a fraction of ANWR $3.9 Trillion Value of the American energy (at today's prices) we could be developing in ANWR and the Chukchi Sea instead of sending that money to OPEC and hostile dictators. $1,953 Foreign Energy Tax paid by every man, woman and child in the U.S. for imported oil per year (including refined products and assuming population of 300,000,000) $1.64 Billion Price of U.S. Imported Oil Products Per Day (including refining products and assuming $120/barrel) 42 Million Gallons of oil per day we could begin producing by or before 2022 if Congress allowed us to do it (1 million barrels/day @ 42 gallons/barrel) $183.5 Billion Income tax and royalty revenue that would flow to the federal government over the 30 year lifetime of ANWR development if Democrats would open 2000 acres of the 19.6 million acre Refuge (CRS estimate at $120/barrel) 15 Billion Gallons of ethanol per year mandated by 2022 under Speaker Pelosi's Energy Bill $7.5 Billion Taxpayers' annual bill once the 15 billion gallon ethanol mandate is reached (based on the current 51 cents/gallon federal subsidy) 75% Percentage of Taxpayers' Ethanol Mandate Bill that could be covered by federal revenues from ANWR energy production ($5.6 billion/year based on $168.2 billion over 30 years) $500 Billion American dollars we'll send to foreign governments and hostile dictators in 2008 because of this body's decades-old policy of saying NO! to any real American energy development $1.30 Increase in the average price of regular gasoline per gallon since the Democratic Majority began their rule over "energy" policy Zero Actions taken by the Democrat Majority to lower Americans' energy prices and our dependence on foreign oil Countless Actions taken by the Democrat Majority to make energy less available and more expensive PRICELESS "Democrats have a commonsense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices" - -Speaker Pelosi, April 24th, 2006 For more information, access the Committee on Natural Resources' Minority website at: http://republicans.resourcescommittee.house.gov/default.aspx # # # Steve Hansen Director of Communications Republican Staff U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources 1329 Longworth HOB Washington, D.C. 20515 (202) 225-7749 This email was cleaned by emailStripper, available for free from http://www.papercut.biz/emailStripper.htm |
