Gerald “Jerry” Leslie Johnson, 89, died in Klamath
Falls,
Ore. on January 29, 2008. A service of Tribute and
Love will be held at the Trinity Lutheran
Church, in Tulelake, Calif., on Monday – February 4,
2008 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Tim & Donna
Herzfeldt-Kamprath, officiating. A reception will
follow at the Fairgounds. Private cremation was held
at Eternal Hills Crematory with inurnment to follow
at Bedfield Cemetery.
Jerry was born on May 3, 1918 to Henry and Lena Swanson Johnson in Pine City, Minnesota. In 1936 he moved to the Klamath Basin – Tulelake area following his brother Leonard who moved here the year before. He worked at the Black & White Ranch in Poe Valley where he met Frances Mae Sullivan. He entered the US Army Air Force in 1942 in Klamath Falls, Ore. Prior to going overseas, he married Frances on March 28, 1943. He then served in the Air Force, received the American Theater Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a Corporal. He won the homestead in Tulelake in 1946 and moved to the farm in 1947. He farmed his property and then, in addition, began working for the Lava Beds National Monument in 1960. He was medically retired from there in 1975.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Tulelake. He was a former member of the VFW Lodge of Tulelake. Member of the Shaw’s Historical Society, 8 th Air Force Historical Society, Far East Water Dist. – past president, past secretary; Farm Bureau; Modoc Historical Society; Lava Beds Historical Society. He survived for ten years as a board member for the Tulelake Volunteer Fire Dept. Gerald loved all sports especially baseball, he played for the far northern semi –pro team; coached for over 16 years in Little League and Babe Ruth. He enjoyed hunting and fishing until his health prevented him from doing so. He never missed a ball game.
He is survived by his wife: Frances of Tulelake, Calif.; Sons and Daughters in Law: Mark and Marie Johnson of Chino Valley, Ariz.; Monte and Dawn Johnson of Tulelake, Calif.; Sisterin-law: Rovella Johnson of Klamath Falls, Ore.; Grandchildren: Bear and Jenni Johnson of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; Jessie Rae Johnson of Salem, Ore.; Jerry Johnson of Napa, Calif.; Emily and Kyle Erkkila of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; Tyler Johnson of Flagstaff, Ariz.; Great Grandchildren: Caleb Dean and Adin Russell Johnson ; Nieces and Nephews: Leroy and Esther Johnson, and Leonore Bergman of Klamath Falls, Ore., Butch Johnson of Tulelake, Calif., Keith and Deb Johnson of Elk City, Minn.; Myrna Johnson of Minn.; Cheryl Johnson of Amarillo, Texas.; Carolyn and Bob Crews and Frank and Kathy Millett of Medford, Ore.; Mona and Dan Sullivan of Klamath Falls, Ore.; Larry and Mary Sullivan of Portland, Ore.; Billy Almeter of Klamath Falls, Ore.; Pat and Tina Sullivan of Klamath Falls, Ore.; John Sullivan of Spokane, Wash.; Special Friend: Bob Workman of Reno, Nev.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Leonard and Marvin “Bud” Johnson.
