www.heraldandnews.com Robert ‘Bob’ Kirby 1/30/15 Bob was born in Klamath Falls at Klamath Valley Hospital to Herbert and Georgette Kirby. He graduated from Tulelake High School in 1973. Bob attended Oregon State University, Shasta College, and University of Nevada, Reno, before returning home to Tulelake to help his mom and dad run their family business, The Tulelake Hardware Store. He worked at his family store, selling sporting goods until he went to work for Sisikyou County Agriculture Department, where he stayed for more than 27 years. In 1983, Bob married the love of his life, Kathy McAuliffe, and they had two children, Brad and Amanda. Two of the proudest days of his life were when his children graduated from University of Nevada, Reno, Brad in civil engineering and Amanda in nursing. At a young age, Bob’s father, Herb, instilled in him a passion for sports. He maintained that passion his entire life. He and his older brother, Don, excelled in football, basketball and baseball. His father coached him and his brother growing up, and Bob, in turn, coached his own children. Whether it was T-ball, Pop Warner, volleyball, softball, baseball, basketball or football, Bob never missed one of his kids’ games. Coaching and watching them play was one of the highlights of his life. Bob also enjoyed watching the Duke Blue Devils with his daughter. In 2011, they were able to stand on Coach K Court together when they traveled back to North Carolina to watch Duke and create a memory that will last forever.Bob developed a love for the outdoors, including hunting and ˙shing, at a very early age. Whether learning from his dad, brother, friends, or simply from his own experiences, he was always trying to sharpen his techniques. Many limits were taken with a gun, or ˙shing rod, as he perfected his abilities. He was always motivated to “˙nd” that something special that would ensure his success and of course to “one up” his buddies. Bob also was an outstanding shot. With shotgun or ri•e, he was always accurate. His love for outdoor sports changed as he grew older. He developed as a tremendously skilled photographer and placed many of his pictures in homes around the Basin. Bob also perfected a skill his father had taught him so many years before, tying •ies. Puji Flies became his trademark and were sought after among his friends and around the Basin. Soon, his son was joining him as well, and Bob was giving way unsel˙shly to ensure Brad’s success, just as he had learned from his father many years before. Some of their favorite memories together were ˙shing at Eagle Lake in December. In all Bob’s experiences, though, there was one constant and that was to have fun, and he did. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Kirby, in 1987. He is survived by his mother, Georgette Kirby; wife, Kathy Kirby; son, Brad Kirby; and daughter, Amanda Kirby. Bob also is survived by his aunt, Doris Bateman; older brother, Don Kirby; sister-inlaw, Kim Kirby; nieces, Leslie Kirby Nicholson, Julie Ostrom, Megan Pahl, Hannah and Michaela McAuliffe; great-nieces, Caileigh Nicholson, Kailee and Adelyn Pahl; greatnephews, Makalu and Colin Ostrom; and numerous lifelong friends. A service honoring Bob’s life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Tulelake High School. A reception will follow at the Tulelake Volunteer Fire Department. In lieu of •owers at Bob’s request, please make a donation to either the Cal-Ore Wetlands and Waterfowl Council to bene˙t the Robert Charles Kirby Youth Memorial Fund, P.O.
