May 20th Bird Festival Schedule Featured on Tulelake Web Site

This year’s event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m at the community building known as the Honker on Main Street in Tulelake, California. Airboat rides through Tule Lake Marsh, wild bird banding and guided trips to local wildlife refuges are just a few of the family events featured at the Festival on May 20th. All events including bus and airboat tours are offered free of charge.

Events include:

  • Locally produced wildlife videos shown throughout the day
  • Live Bluegrass music featuring the Chuck Holloway band -- late morning and early afternoon
  • Guided tour of Lower Klamath Refuge (bus trip) 9:00 – 11:30 (reservations suggested)
  • Live bird demonstrations presented by Wildlife Images -- throughout the day
  • Airboat rides through Tule Lake Marsh (RESERVATIONS REQUIRED 530-667-4665) STARTING TIMES: 10:00 TO 3:00 at half hour intervals
  • Volunteer Fire Department Tri-Tip Bar-b-que (noon until it’s gone!); food and refreshments (all day)
  • Neotropical bird identification field trip 9:00 to 12:00 (reservations suggested)
  • Hands-on mist netting and bird banding at the Tule Lake Refuge visitor center (7:30 - noon)
  • Guided tours of Discovery Marsh (meet at the Tule Lake Refuge visitor center) – offered during the morning, as visitors arrive. Light refreshments will be provided at the visitor center
  • Raptor Identification bus trip to the Petroglyphs on Lava Beds National Monument --1:00 to 3:30 (reservations suggested)
  • Youth activities for all ages including: Children’s wildlife art instruction, bird house building, live hawk and owl demonstrations (all day), live bird educational program (starting at 10:30 pm) and a "fun with bird migration game" (noon to 1:00 pm)
  • Walking Wetlands bus tour—1:00 to 3:00

Tulelake Saturday Events Feature Birds, Baseball, Bluegrass and Barbecue

The annual Tule Lake Migratory Bird Festival and a high school championship baseball game will be on tap in Tulelake, California this coming weekend. This year’s bird festival will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the community building known as the Honker on Main Street in Tulelake, California. Airboat rides through Tule Lake Marsh, wild bird banding, guided trips to Tule Lake and Lower Klamath Refuges as well as a host of exhibits, videos and children’s events are just a few of the many family events which will be featured at the festival. All festival events including bus and airboat tours are offered free of charge.

Live bluegrass music by the Chuck Holloway band will be featured from mid-morning through the early afternoon. Starting at noon, the Tulelake Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting its ever-popular Tri-Tip Barbecue as a fundraising event.

As an added bonus to this year’s festival, The Tulelake High School baseball team, the Honkers, will be playing in the final round of the CIF North Section Division IV championship. The championship game against the high school team from Etna, California will be held across the street from the festival site starting at 1:00 p.m. Festival organizer Tony Giacomelli hopes that participants will enjoy the festival in the morning and make it an "all Tulelake day" by taking in the baseball game in the afternoon.
