-- A larger voice for rural America with new newspaper family.

By Liz Bowen, assistant editor, Pioneer Press, Fort Jones, California

FORT JONES, CALIFORNIA - On Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, Daniel Webster purchased the Tri-County Courier, the weekly newspaper in the Klamath Basin. The publisher of the Pioneer Press has renamed it the Klamath Courier.

"I have had a soft-heart for the Klamath Basin, since our communities joined in mass to support the farmers and ranchers in the 2001 Bucket Brigade. It is very humbling to now be their local publisher," said Webster, who is also the owner and editor of the Pioneer Press.

The Tri-county Courier was founded in January of 2003 by Kehn Gibson and Pat Ratliff, who will continue with the Klamath Courier. Gibson will serve as editor and Ratliff as staff photographer and write, according to Webster.

Webster is the second owner and publisher of the Pioneer Press. He purchased it in July of 1998, from Gary Mortenson, who founded the weekly in western Siskiyou County on Nov. 16, 1972.

"This is the only family of newspapers that cover this entire important region," said Webster.
