Oceans apart
(Filed: 21/07/2005) Native Americans from four tribes danced outside Scottish Power's headquarters in Glasgow yesterday in protest at dams operated by its Pacificorp subsidiary. They claim dams on the Klamath river in California and Oregon block 350 miles of historic salmon spawning grounds, contributing to a sharp decline in fish numbers. They are angry that after a high-profile visit to Scotland last year, which won them a commitment from the company to find a solution, Scottish Power sold Pacificorp to MidAmerican in May. A Scottish Power spokesman said yesterday: "We have said all along this is a complex issue that will be settled by Pacificorp in the US and that remains the case."
