Access to Modoc County meetings sorely needed

Letter to the editor of Herald and News by Ron Rutledge, Alturas, 7/13/13

On July 9 the Modoc County Supervisors began holding public meetings in a room on the second floor of our courthouse building. The only access to that room is up a long series of steps.

The meetings had previously been held in a larger room with access to everyone.

The only reason for the move seems to be to limit access. There has been no reason given for the move, although I have contacted my representative about it.

I doubt that any other county in California has been so brazen about disrespecting our elderly and disabled with a backward change like this intended to limit access to meetings.

I have a breathing problem that makes climbing long sets of stairs difficult but I attended this meeting. I can make it to the meetings but it means resting about five minutes two times to get to the meeting room.

All of this while a perfectly suitable meeting room sits empty. There is also inadequate fire escape routes to egress the meeting room.
