1973 - Gold mining claims

Record prices for gold on the world market have created new “land office business” for the Bureau of Land Management, according to Oregon Director Archie D. Craft. “During the past few weeks we have received a steady increase in the number of requests for information about where and how to locate gold mining claims,” Craft reported. Under the Mining Law of 1872, a citizen may locate any number of mining claims on public lands. Each claim must have an actual discovery of mineral and may be 20 acres. The filing of the claim allows a person to develop and extract the mineral, but confers no other right. Claimant cannot build a summer home or business, remove timber or graze livestock on a claim. Each year a claimant must do $100 assessment work on each claim and file a record of such work with the county.
