Funding for various on-farm
conservation programs is being
lost by Klamath Project
farmers. Many new national and
regional programs designed to
assist farmers to become more
efficient with their water
requirements is being overlooked
and not applied for in the
Klamath Basin. These programs
provide significant funding to
assist farmers make on-farm
improvements.
Klamath Irrigation District
invites all irrigators to
contact Josh Elke with
the Klamath Falls Natural
Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
office at 1945 Main Street, Ste
200, in Klamath Falls to learn
more about the numerous funding
opportunities and to formally
request access to the various
programs. Josh can be reached at
541-887-3503.
Klamath Irrigation District’s
vision for the modernization of
our system includes programs
which create a 30% water
savings. By reducing water
demand, we can keep lands in
production instead of reacting
to continued pressure by various
groups to reduce the number of
irrigated acres by 30%. We
believe this is possible through
various programs to include:
Upgrading existing irrigation
systems to LEPA systems which
are deemed 97% efficient. Wheel
lines are deemed only 60-70%
efficient. Funding
for this program may become
available if the irrigators in
the Klamath Basin demonstrate
interest to Josh.
Enrollment in Conservation
Reserve Program (CRP). CRP is a
land conservation program
administered by the Farm Service
Agency (FSA). In exchange for a
yearly rental payment, farmers
enrolled in the program agree to
remove environmentally sensitive
land from agricultural
production and plant species
that will improve environmental
health and quality.
