KID talks water, efficiency with Tribes

Klamath Irrigation District officials last week met with Klamath Tribes officials at the Tribal Administration Building in Chiloquin to talk about water management and irrigation district goals.

The gathering between the groups included wide-ranging topics, including the irrigation district's intent at the time to pursue water distribution control by Oregon Water Resources Department as well as efforts to boost efficiencies at the district.

Klamath Tribes Chairman Don Gentry called the meeting a brief but good, “focused” conversation, spanning about an hour, and a chance for individuals to introduce themselves.

KID's board chairman Ty Kliewer, who also attended the meeting with Tribes, said he believed the gathering was movement in a positive direction.

“The good part of it was kind of talking (about) where we would like to go in the future, and it was hopefully a step in the right direction, and will open future dialogue and collaboration,” Kliewer said.

“Obviously there's some issues that we see pretty differently but I think we have a lot more issues that we're kind of on the same page with, and I hope that we can all start working together as a community to make a better community.

“It was just good to get in the same room together and talk to each other,” Kliewer added.
