USPacifiCorp participates in community activities and outreach programs throughout its six state service area. Here are just some of the projects sponsored by PacifiCorp and its foundation, the PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning: LITERACY: PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning Sponsors Childhood Literacy ProjectsThe PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning - one of the West's largest-endowed corporate foundations - is in the midst of a $1 million, three-year initiative to improve childhood literacy in western states served by Pacific Power and Utah Power.
All projects have similar aims, with different approaches. The Foundation selected the programs because of their innovative and diverse approaches and the participation of proven partners in delivering quality programs. The Foundation is also very active in the Start Making a Reader Today (SMART) program in Oregon. It engages PacifiCorp employees to go into schools and help children improve their reading skills. In addition to the early childhood literacy
initiative, the Foundation is bringing its focus on
learning with other grants made from its endownment
of more than $35 million. Since its founding in
1988, the PacifiCorp Foundation has made more than
6,000 grants to communities served by Pacific Power
and Utah Power. Boys & Girls Clubs get a boost with Project LearnThe Foundation recently expanded its funding of
the Boys & Girl's Clubs after school program,
Project Learn. The program provides 25-35 hours per
week of quality after school programs, including
leisure reading, writing activities, homework help
and games that develop cognitive skills. Studies
have shown that Project Learn has had a dramatic
effect on academic achievement - participants show
an 11 percent increase in their overall grade point
average compared to youths in other after-school
programs. Project Learn currently takes place in
selected Utah, Wyoming and Oregon clubs. COMMUNITY GIVING CAMPAIGNAcross the service territory hundreds of PacifiCorp, Pacific Power , PPM and Utah Power employees contributed over $550,000 to two dozen local community giving campaigns focusing primarily on the health and welfare of some of our neediest neighbors. These employee contributions were matched dollar for dollar by the PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning resulting in a total contribution of over $1.1 million. United WayFor more than 80 years, United Way has helped people through a crisis - a hot meal, a warm bed, job training, a safe home, quality child care, health care and much more. By focusing on four Community Impact areas - Community Wellness, Helping Hands, Successful Kids and Tools for Living - the United Way helps people meet their immediate needs and provides them with the tools to change their lives. Black United Fund of OregonEstablished in 1983, the Black United Fund of Oregon is a philanthropic, fundraising and community development institution. Their mission is to assist in the social and economic development of Oregon's low income communities and to contribute to the broader understanding of ethnic and culturally diverse groups. Earth Share of OregonEstablished in 1989, Earth Share is a federation of America's leading nonprofit environmental and conservation organizations working to promote environmental education and charitable giving through workplace giving campaigns. Earth Share is an opportunity for environmentally conscious employees and workplaces to support dozens of environmental groups at once through a charitable giving drive. KEEPING CUSTOMERS WARMHelping less-fortunate with high billsPacific Power and Utah Power work with local
nonprofit agencies to help eligible customers with
energy expenses through the installation of energy
efficient measures and through bill payment
assistance. These agency relationships benefit
everyone. They help customers manage their bills and
energy use, and they give less fortunate customers
referrals for other needed programs and services.
Pacific Power and Utah Power rely upon the expertise and creativity of agencies across its service area to advocate proper energy management rather than only bill assistance. The utilities commit more than $2.4 million each year to energy programs that assist households in need. The funds also leverage state and federal program grants. In addition to direct agency contracts, the company places envelopes in its bills to solicit donations to the program from customers, which are then matched by the company. WeatherizationThe Community Energy Project offers Free Home Weatherization for low income senior citizens and people with disabilities who live in Portland. PacifiCorp employee volunteers and others install energy saving materials - just a half-day of work can help someone stay warm and save energy all winter long. Rebuilding homesPacifiCorp teams up with Rebuilding Together and the PacifiCorp Foundation to adopt and rehabilitate homes for needy families. Rebuilding Together is the nation's largest nonprofit home rehabilitation program. It provides needed home repair and rehab services for low income, elderly and disabled homeowners and their families in our communities. ENVIRONMENTTwice a year, PacifiCorp awards grants for selected environmental education projects and activities to nonprofit agencies or groups throughout its service area. Recent grant recipients include the Intermountain Natural History Association, Audubon Society of Portland, Klamath Basin Ecosystem Foundation, Uintah Raptor Rehab Inc. and others. HELPING KIDSKids on the Block Awareness ProgramPacifiCorp volunteers help transform 270 tons of sand and 4,500 gallons of water into magnificent sand sculptures each summer in downtown Portland. The beneficiary of this event is Kids on the Block, which uses child-size puppets to help children understand and accept differences in one another, and to protect themselves in difficult situations. Evening as a ChildEach year PacifiCorp volunteers help put on a fundraiser for Morrison Child & Family Services. Morrison serves children who have experienced abuse, neglect, learning disabilities and serious emotional trauma. Evening as a Child is a fundraiser where adults gather to play games and live as children for the night. Part of the community since 1947, Morrison supports families and annually saves the lives of 5,000 children from birth through to eighteen years old.
