Local water supply faces threat

I hear on the radio the city is celebrating clean drinking water this month.

This is a fantastic opportunity to highlight and say thanks to the excellent job Randy Travis and his great crew of men and women who provide us with one of the best clean sources of water anywhere. Five deep water wells located on Conger Avenue produce 80 percent of this life-giving water to over 40,000 users. This is truly one of the best things about Klamath falls. So, hats off to them in the water department, excellent job!

But unfortunately, this is not the only reason for my letter.

A small number of others who call themselves the Klamath Tribe may want to take this away.

The Tribe has already used its water rights to take lake water that makes it possible to produce thousands of acres of crops, which in turn employs thousands of people and generates millions of dollars to support this county, and who have this idea that destroying four hydroelectric dams that product low cost and sustainable power is a wonderful thing for everyone and may now want to possibly shut down those wells I was talking about.

It seems their rights may allow them to do just this based on the fact those wells are close enough to the Link River they may cause a shortage of water for endangered fish downstream. So, call the City Council, county commissioners, and the Tribe and ask questions.
