Klamath's JC Boyle Dam removal complies with water quality

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has determined that removal of John C. Boyle Dam along the Klamath River in Oregon will comply with all water quality standards, limitations and restrictions set by Oregon water law and the federal Clean Water Act.

A decision on a similar permit in regards to dams slated for removal on the California side is pending through the California Department of Environmental Department.

“I think this helps clarify for people who were kind of in the middle or who just wanted facts, or who just didn’t know,” said Dave Meurer, community liaison for KRRC.

“This will help reassure them the facts support dam removal to receive environmental and fishery benefits.”

The ODEQ action is proof that the agency believes removal of dams from Klamath County is expected to improve water quality, and restore the Klamath River to a more “free-flowing”condition that will provide long term benefits to fish, according to a KRRC news release.

“ODEQ’s final Section 401 Water Quality Certification brings KRRC one step closer to fulfilling its mission of returning the river to a more natural state, improving water quality, and restoring fish passage,” said Mark Bransom, chief executive officer of KRRC.

“This final certification is a significant milestone for KRRC, as it is one of several major permits and approvals we require to proceed with dam removal.”

A date has not been determined for FERC’s consideration of dam removal, though the start of dam removal, if approved, could start in January 2021, according to Meurer.
