Counties’ unemployment rates improve, but still lag behind California averages Based on figures from the California Development Department, the unemployment rate in Siskiyou County dropped from 15.5 percent in February to 14.9 percent, while the drop in Modoc County was from 13.5 to 12.9 percent. In comparison, the California unemployment rate dropped during the same period from 8.5 to 8.4 percent, while the national average shifted from 7.0 to 6.8 percent. In Modoc County, 460 people of the county’s 3,610 labor force are without work, while 2,600 of Siskiyou County’s 17,880 work force are unemployed.In Siskiyou County, 50 new jobs were reported in leisure and hospitality, 40 in farm, 20 each in government, financial activities and professional business services, and 10 each in construction, manufacturing, and educational and health services, while 40 losses occurred in trade, transportation and utilities. Occupations with the most job ads in Siskiyou County were for registered nurses, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, social and human service assistant, forest and conservation technicians and customer service representatives.In Modoc County, 40 new jobs were created in farming and 10 in trade, transportation and utilities, while 10 were lost in state/federal government. The occupations with the most job ads were forest and conservation technicians, physical therapists, registered nurses, range managers and forest firefighters. Statewide, Modoc County had the state’s 42nd highest unemployment rate, while Siskiyou County had the 53rd highest. Colusa County had the highest unemployment rate of California’s 58 counties, 24.5 percent, while Imperial had 21.4 percent.lee@heraldandnews.com
