Jobless rates stagnate
in Northern California
Unemployment rates in Modoc
and Siskiyou counties remained virtually unchanged in February,
based on reports from the California Employment Development
Department.
As has been the trend the past three years, unemployment rates in both counties are well above the state and national averages. In Modoc County, the rate for February was 13.2 percent while in Siskiyou County the rate was 15.3 percent. The California average for the month was 8.5 percent while the national rate was 7 percent. In Modoc County, 470 of the county’s 3,080 labor force were unemployed in February while in Siskiyou County 2,730 of the 17,790 work force were without work.Based on statistics, 170 job losses in Siskiyou County were in farming, construction, wholesale trade, trade/transportation/utilities, retail trade, financial activities, local government and service providing. Slight gains were reported in educational and health services, professional and business services, and leisure and hospitality. Occupations with the most job ads were registered nurses, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, foresters, forest and conservation technicians, and speech language pathologists. Job losses in Modoc County were seen in trade/transportation/utilities, and private service providing. Increases were reported in federal and local government. Occupations with the most job ads include forest and conservation technicians, physical therapists, registered nurses, biological technicians and forest fire fighters.Statewide, Modoc County had the 46th highest unemployment rate while Siskiyou County was the 54th highest. Colusa County had the highest rate among California’s 58 counties at 24.2 percent.
