A Note from Bob McLandress, To Us
President of California Waterfowl Association
CWA is currently working on a deposition to intervene in the case. We will be supporting Kandra et als. position against the
USFWS. It is well known to most waterfowl biologists and hunters that certain agricultural crops (cereal grains, potatoes, alfalfa,
irrigated pasture, etc.) provide critical foods for waterfowl and that the farming community needs to remain viable if current waterfowl
populations are to be sustained. We have a biologist currently working with farmers in the Klamath Basin (Tim Griffiths) to assist
them in obtaining government conservation funding to encourage waterfowl-friendly farming practices.
I am currently the President of California Waterfowl Association. I have a PhD (Ecology) from U.C.Davis. I am also the current
Chairman of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science Dean's Advisory Council at U.C. Davis. I was chosen for that
position because I am a firm believer that conservation and agricultural groups can and must work together in solving many
environmental problems.
Perhaps no wildlife better demonstrate the benefits of combining natural and agricultural habitats to sustain wildlife better than game
species. The money generated by hunting enthusiasts supports more than 60% of the managed wetlands and natural habitats
remaining in California (and much of the remaining 40% are public lands were purchased by monies obtained from hunting license
sales and/or special taxes on guns and ammunition). The populations of waterfowl, which generate this generous conservation
spending are dependent upon agricultural lands for significant portions of their annual life cycle requirements.
Thanks - Bob
