BLM meeting seeks public comments (by March 31st)

Herald and News 3/12/14

A public meeting to discuss The Bureau of Land Management’s Planning Criteria document for the Resource Management Plans for Western Oregon will be 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday (March 13) at the Shilo Inn, 2500 Almond St., in Klamath Falls.

The meeting is the seventh in a series of eight meetings being held throughout Oregon to discuss the Planning Criteria, which provides an in-depth look at guidance, policy, analytical methodology and preliminary alternatives.

“This document is the public’s look at how the BLM is proposing to analyze alternatives and move towards land management plans for Western Oregon,” BLM spokesmen Mark Brown and Michael Campbell said in a press release.

The document includes four proposed alternatives that discuss such issues as timber management, forest reserves for northern spotted owls and marbled murrelet critical habit, protection for older forests and riparian reserves. The alternatives offer options that would focus on providing the most acres, for example, to species protection as opposed to timber harvests.

A portion of the BLM’s Western Oregon land includes land managed by the agency’s Klamath Falls office.

The comment period for the planning criteria will run until March 31. Along with attending the Thursday night Klamath Falls meeting, the public is invited to send in comments on the web, by email, or by mail to the BLM’s Oregon State Office. As a part of the public comment period, Brown and Campbell said the BLM is interested in hearing from the public about the Planning   Criteria through interactive discussion in local listening sessions.
