Fuel standards opposed by Rep. Gail Whitsett; Representative said the standards will profoundly affect rural Oregonians

Low-carbon fuel standards initiated by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality were opposed by Rep. Gail Whitsett, R-Klamath Falls, at a press conference during the three-day informational Legislative Days session this week in Salem. Whitsett said the standards will profoundly affect rural Oregonians.

According to Whitsett, if the new standards go into effect, nearly 30,000 jobs will be lost, and Oregonians could pay more than $1 per gallon in additional gas taxes.

Whitsett also heard testimony in the House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources that a bill or executive decision by Gov. John Kitzhaber to ban lead bullets may be in the state’s future. Whitsett said lead is already banned from use in waterfowl hunting.

Whitsett said if a bill to ban lead bullets is introduced in the 2015 legislative session, she plans to introduce a bill protecting citizens’ rights to use them.

In the House Committee on Human Services and Housing, Whitsett heard a report indicating state officials are   considering creating community treatment resource facilities for mentally ill citizens. She said the facilities would be used to stabilize mentally ill persons   instead of sending them to the hospital or putting them in jail. If adopted, the program’s structure would follow the Alameda Model developed in California.

“I think that would be a good thing if we could find the money to do that in each county,” Whitsett said.
