April 6, 2004 Organic horseradish is being harvested in the Panhandle south of Tulelake, CA. near the Oregon border. It's early spring, so the leaves are brown from winter frost. Several Tulelake growers raise a combined total of 900 acres, 30% of the total horseradish grown in the United States. This harvester was converted from a potato harvester in the late 50's by the homesteader Jack Newkirk. photo by truck driver Jacqui Krizo |
